Like with all sports and the rest of the world in general, 2020 was a year to forget, a year in which everything suddenly stopped. All the usual live poker events were cancelled and so was the Global Poker Index (GPI) Global Poker Awards 2020.

Some changes have been made to the awards, they will be hosted at the PokerGo studio in Las Vegas, just like in 2019 and 2020, but this year, they have decided to make the studios the set location for all upcoming award events.

Eric Danis, the President of the Global Poker Index and The Hendon Mob Organisation said in his statement that while the 2021 awards have been cancelled, there will be changes and a new re-vamped award ceremony for us in 2022, ''We are honoured to be a part of celebrating the accomplishments of the most renowned figures in the poker industry.''

The news was dropped in a Twitter post, linking to an interview between Eric Danis and PokerGo commentator, Jeff Platt. In the interview, Danis explains that “for most of us it’s been a rough year, and it just didn’t make sense COVID-wise to host awards.”

One of the reasons for this is that there was an 85% drop in player attendance to tournaments last year and as a result, a lot of the awards and trophies that were set to be given out, no longer made sense, including the Player Of the Year (POY) award.

Fans will have to wait until March 2022 to get the new and renewed version of the most popular poker award show in the world, streamed live on PokerGo from their studio in Las Vegas.
